Dorothy Grove

Funeral of Mrs D. Grove.

The church was filled to overflowing last Thursday, with extra chairs having to be bought in for the funeral of Mrs D. Grove who died suddenly in hospital on the morning of Christmas Eve.

Villagers heard the news of her death with great sadness, because all who knew her respected and loved her. A year ago the village hall had been filled with friends and relatives celebrating with her, her 80th birthday, and a few days prior to her death she was busy preparing for Christmas.

The service was taken by the Rev. J Walters and Mr Lewis Childs, a cousin, gave the address. Three of her favourite hymns were sung, followed by the 'Nunc Dimitis'. Interment was at Clifton Campville churchyard.

Memorial Service.

Many friends together with a full choir, which included two of her granddaughters, attended the memorial service to Mrs D Grove on Sunday evening.

Born in Stretton, near Burton-on-Trent, she was the first pupil to win a state scholarship to Burton High School. She was a student leader for a year, before going to Bangor teacher training college in 1926.

She taught juniors at Bournebrook, Birmingham and from 1933 to 1939 was head teacher at Lullington, joining in village activities and starting a Girl Guide Troop.

She and her husband Fred Grove, a farmer from Church Farm Harlaston, were married in Lullington Church in 1938. They spent their married life at Church Farm where her husband died in 1955. She went back to teaching in primary schools including Clifton and Elford and in Tamworth. In 1958 she moved to teach at Flax Hill School from where she retired in 1968.

During her 50 years in the village she had been connected with various organisations. In 1946 she started the 1st Haraston Girl Guide Group, taking several local girls on camping holidays on many occasions.
