Village trades and hobbies

Blooms tell of village trades.

Ehibition, St Matthews Church attracted many visitors and villagers on Saturday and Sunday to see the flower festival and hobbies exhibition.

The beautiful floral arrangements were all done by village ladies to commemorate the patronal festival of the church.

Each window with its individual decoration and exhibit depicted the various trades of the village: general farming, pig-farming, teaching, coal mining, medical and country sports.

An outstanding floral arrangement on the altar was a display of an "English country garden" with all various fruits.

Another wasa flower arrangement of chrysanthemums surrounding "Matthew sitting at the seat of custom."

The pulpit floral display was masses of white flowers cascading from a milk churn and trailing down the steps to where an old butter patts and an old butter churn were displayed with various milk bottles.

A model shire horse and cart were also decorated with flowers. There was a fantastic display of hobbies, especially from the youth of the village. Rug making, various pictures, scraper boards, a collection of coins, stamps, cigarette cards (dating back to the Queen's father's coronation) an assortment of spoons collected over a period of time from different parts of the counrty, key rings, rubbers and yesteryear matchbox toys.

There were also displays on wine making, fishing tackle, cake dishes collected over a period of 10 years and a drawing of the church by computer.

As the weather was so nice, some teas and refreshments were served in the church grounds.

Fruit, cakes, plants, home-made sweets and Christmas cards were on sale in the church porch. The festival finished off with a service "Songs of Praise" chosen favourite hymns of the villagers.
